Hyperglycemia is a condition in which a high concentration of glucose occurs in an organism due to a relative deficiency of insulin in the body. If this condition is present inType 1 Diabetes for a longer time, the organism cannot use glucose as an energy source and starts to make use of fat deposits. The remnants of metabolism of fats are then cumulated in the body. In higher concentrations lead even to the hyperglycemic coma. Glycemia levels higher than 20 mmol/l are considered to be dangerous in this respect. It is, however, necessary to also deal with levels around 15 mmol/l, especially if they are present for a longer period or in patients using an insulin pump.
The symptoms of hyperglycemia are:
thirst
excessive daily urination
dry skin, often dry throat
The symptoms of ketoacidosis are:
acetone smelling breath
stomach problems (nausea, vomiting)
weakness, obstinancy
unconsciousness
With the first symptoms of ketoacidosis, a diabetic should try to decrease glycemia. If glycemia persists, and the symptoms remain present for an extended time, it is necessary to call for medical assistance.
