The Diabetic Leg Syndrome is the name given to relatively common damage to the lower extremities in diabetics. This damage originates especially due to two complementary factors. First is the present ischemia (restriction in blood supply) of lower extremities caused by atherosclerosis and the related ischemic disease of lower extremities. Consequently, the oxygen supply to tissues is insufficient, therefore the extremities are more likely to be injured. The injury is healing more slowly then. The second factor is the diabetic polyneuropathy, which also influences worse blood supply to the extremities. It is, however, in the first place the cause of worse sensitivity of particular areas, leading more easily to injuries in the extremities that the patients often notice late (nothing makes them aware of the injury).
