What are saccharides?

E-mail Print

Saccharides are one of the sources of energy. They are found in almost all kinds of food except for meat.

They are basically in two forms:

-  simple sugars (mono- and di- saccharides) which can be quickly absorbed, are included in sweet foods, fruit, fruit juice. Glucose comes in this group.

-  complex sugars (polysaccharides) which are in grain, potatoes, vegetables, etc. These are from the point of view of diabetes the most advantageous source of saccharides as they get absorbed gradually. Saccharides from food are broken down in the appropriate part of the digestive system and absorbed in the blood circulation especially in the form of glucose.
